Matt Matheson - Follow Up

Reporter - Charlotte O’Donnell

This is a follow-up to an article I wrote about Darwin Matheson (Matt) in December 2000.
Laura King, who lives in the park on Lanai Circle, read the article and noticed that he was born in 1935 in Madison, Wisconsin—the same year and town that she was born in. She kept thinking that she should look him up but just kept putting it off.

About three months ago she started walking around the park about three times a week. Each day she walked past Matt’s home and hoped that one day he might be outside. Well, one day he was. She went up to him and told him that she grew up in the same town he did and was the same age. Matt, being the friendly guy he is, gave her a big hug. Then she said, "I went to Edgewood High School." Matt said, "You know, I took a girl to a prom from Edgewood High School" While he was trying to think of her name, Laura thought that she would probably know her. Then he said, "Her name was Laura Scott." Laura could not believe it—she said, "That’s me!" Of course then he really gave her a big hug. Laura says she still cannot believe it.

She went home and spent at least an hour looking for the pictures that were taken that night, January 24, 1952—50 years and 2500 miles ago. She has shared the pictures with Matt and had copies made for him.

It bothered her that she did not remember his name because she certainly remembers the prom. She finally remembered she did not know him by Matt or Darwin but by a different nickname he had at the time. She says they were not really "boy friend and girl friend." Her friend was dating his friend and they fixed them up for the prom. So they only went out together a few times

So if you never believed it before, this proves that "IT’S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL."
